La Geria: Lanzarote’s remarkable vineyards

Vines planted in hollows of volcanic ash and sheltered from the wind make La Geria one of Lanzarote’s most distinctive landscapes.

Why the hollows and stone walls?

After the eighteenth-century eruptions, growers had to work with a layer of volcanic ash. They dig hollows down to fertile soil and plant the vine below the surface. The volcanic gravel helps retain moisture and reduces evaporation.

Stone walls, often semicircular, shield the vines from the trade winds. This labour-intensive method yields relatively little per vine. Stay on paths and approved viewpoints rather than walking across cultivated plots.

From landscape to glass

Malvasía Volcánica is one of the island’s emblematic grapes. The Lanzarote wine designation of origin has covered the island since 1993 and includes other varieties too. Tasting the wines connects the glass to the landscape.

Choose a winery that offers visits or tastings, check its opening hours, and arrange a driver who will not drink or other suitable transport.
